Determined to raise her own child, seventeen-year old high school senior Erica French (Keri Russell) decides against adoption. Although single parent life is difficult for Erica, she wants to provide a better life for herself and her daughter by getting a college education. She is unjustly punished for her ambition, however, as the baby's father and his family are fighting for custody because Erica puts her daughter in day care. A bitter custody battle ensues which is centered around the issue of child care.
