Echinops ritro is a tall perennial that is commonly called Globe Thistle. It adds a unique texture to the perennial flower garden. The blooms are in shades of purple and can be up to 1 ¾ inches in diameter. Deadheading will promote more blooming. Globe Thistle is fairly drought tolerant and low maintenance. It makes a nice cut flower and the blooms are popular for drying. Start the seed directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed after temperatures are consistently warm. Press the seed into the soil but do not cover it. Keep the seed moist until germination. With a temperature range of 65 - 70F, germination usually is within 21 days. Space the plants 18 - 24 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained soil. Globe Thistle is usually resistant to deer. Wear gloves when handling the plant.
