Picea abies 'Acrocona' (Acrocona Norway Spruce) * Full sun-Part shade * Zones 3-7 * 10' tall * 8' wide * Remarkable, raspberry-red cones on the tips of its branches in spring! Picea abies 'Acrocona' This fast growing evergreen tree is extremely hardy and wind resistant. Pyramidal growth habit when young, becoming columnar when mature. Bark is red-brown. Leaves are needle-like, dark green, blunt, and four sided, to 1 inch long. Leaves point upward and forward on orange-brown shoots. 'Acrocona' is small, with drooping branches and bears an abundance of cones. Even when young, this delightful conifer develops remarkable, raspberry-red cones on the tips of its branches in spring. The unusual coning habit tends to modify growth rate and shape and to produce a broad, spreading pyramid. Known since 1890, when found in a forest near Uppsala, Sweden, the plant has an apt name, 'Acrocona,' which means "with terminal cones on the ends of the branches." Companion Plants: Goes well with Pinus parviflora 'Glauca', Vanderwolf's Pyramid Pine, Thunderhead Pine as well as Black Bamboo. Check out our store for these great plants!
