Julius Caesar has been assassinated and an uneasy Rome awaits the angry retribution of the city’s triumvirs – Antony, Octavian and Lepidus. Quintus Cantillus, a Roman by birth, is nevertheless a member of the Shield Brethren, the knights of the Virgin defenders. A vision has brought him to Rome, where he is summoned by a vestal virgin, Valeria, to save her brother and his young son, Gaius from the legendary fury of Lepidus. At first, the coldly pragmatic Quintus doesn’t want to get involved, but when Lepidus’ troops behead a man at the dinner table, he throws himself into the fight, fleeing Rome alongside Gaius. The young boy carries with him a precious heirloom that all of Rome covets – a precious trinket, Caesar’s Pearl. They will kill Quintus and Gaius to get it. But first they will have to get past the Shield Brethren.
