The Acai palm is one of the most valuable palms. It has become notorious for the anti-oxidant qualities of the fruit juice and as a host of many health benefits from weight loss to increased energy and lower cholesterol. It is a graceful, fast growing palm that produces multiple branches which can reach 80 ft. A single seed may grow a plant providing up to 25 new shoots - growing individually. It has pinnate leaves that start from a prominent crownshaft that is reddish in color. It has adapted to live in periodically waterlogged and flooded soils by developing special root structures called pneumatophores. It produces both male and female flowers which are small and a brown/purple color. The edible fruit grows in bunches and each tree stem produces four to eight bunches throughout the year. The fruit is also highly valued for use in wine or as a juice, and a dense purple liquid is strained from the seed which has an tasty incomparable flavor that is served cold or with sugar and tapioca flour. This palm is also the world's main source for the delicious "heart of palm". It requires constant warmth and high humidity and will take full sun as it matures.
