Douglas Fir is one of the world's most impressive trees. One noted naturalist called Douglas Fir, "the highest expression of tree greatness in our time." Indeed, Douglas Fir forms some of the tallest and most magnificent woods in the world. Except for California's unique Sequoias, Douglas Fir grows taller and greater in girth than any other American tree. The tallest Douglas Fir on record stood almost 400 feet tall with a diameter in excess of 17 feet. The trees can live to ages greater than 1,000 years. Douglas Fir grows rapidly, and has long ranked first among U.S. lumber trees. Widely grown as an ornamental in Europe, Douglas Fir, with its sweet fragrance and wonderful symmetry, is cherished in America as a prime species to use for Christmas trees. Douglas Fir is the official State Tree of Oregon.
