Napoleon in his memoirs indicated that two Mamluk solders could successfully hold three French cavalrymen. Riding skill, better weapons and superior horses allowed them to take the upper hand in duels. However, victory in skirmishes of large masses of cavalry would be achieved by the army which possesses the discipline, the ability to concerted actions, and the officers capable of using these benefits.
