This volume contains the complete 16 short stories of the amazingly popular series "SERGEANT MICHAEL CASSIDY, R.E.", by Sapper (Herman Cyril McNeile). It also features the 12 short stories of the companion volume, THE LIEUTENANT AND OTHERS.

Cassidy is a legendary soldier in the Corps of Royal Engineers -courageous, fiery and full of Irish charm, fighting in World War I. He has been known to turn even Brigadier-Generals trembling and submissive. During his temporary absence from the plains of Flanders, he meets our narrator - a higher-ranking officer who is in awe of Cassidy's formidable reputation - and during their break from action, they share incredible stories about life on the front.

Sapper, author of the also popular "Bulldog Drummond" series, was a real soldier who wrote from first hand experience. He went to France in 1914 when World War I broke out and he saw action at both the First and the Second Battle of Ypres where he displayed considerable bravery, was awarded the Military Cross and was mentioned in dispatches.
