YOU AND ME (1938) is one of the earliest and quirkiest noir films by famed German director Fritz Lang (The Big Heat, 1953). Born in Vienna, Lang was responsible for some of the most technically and visually groundbreaking films of the silent and early sound era, including Metropolis (1927) and M (1931). Landing at MGM after fleeing Nazi Germany, he would make 21 features in the next 21 years, many of them noted for their gut-wrenching stories and striking camerawork. A romantic comedy-drama that packs a punch of social commentary through the hard-boiled love story of a hard-luck couple, YOU AND ME (1938) stars George Raft and Sylvia Sydney as two former convicts who find honest work in a department store and love in one another – until a dark secret from the past threatens to drive them apart.
