This book, and others in the same series, takes place in a future where humanity has moved beyond the confines of the Earth and has started colonising other worlds, both in our solar system and around nearby stars.
On one of these worlds, a planet called Hera, a group of female supremacists manage to gain control of the colonisation expedition and its colonies early on. Under their rule, the human colonists on Hera build a society based on female domination. In their society, only women can be citizens, and all men are slaves – indeed the word “male” is considered synonymous with slave among the Herans.

This book, the first in the series, tells the story of how this world came about, seen through the eyes of some of the Heran colonists.

The book also contain additional background information on Hera and the society that develops there.
