WHEN TO PLANT
Kale - sow from early spring through late summer.
Lettuce - direct-seed as soon as soil can be worked; sow every three weeks into the fall for a continuous harvest.
Spinach - direct-seed as soon as the soil can be worked in spring; seed again in the late summer through early fall.
Swiss Chard - direct-seed as soon as soil can be worked mid-spring throughout mid-summer; transplants can be started 4-6 weeks ahead of your planting date.
GROW PATTERNS AND TIMING
Kale - for baby leaf, sow approximately 60 seeds per foot in 2-4" bands with about 2" between bands; for a full-sized crop, sow with a seed spacing of about 1" and a row spacing of around 19".
Lettuce - for baby leaf, sow approximately 60 seeds per foot in 2" bands with about 1" between bands; for a full-sized crop, sow approximately 60 seeds per foot with a row spacing of about 1".
Spinach - for baby leaf, sow approximately 40 seeds per foot in 2-4" bands with about 1" between bands; for a full-sized crop, sow with a seed spacing of 6-10 seeds per foot and a row spacing of 12-18 inches; sow every 7 days for a continual harvest.
Swiss Chard - sow 1 seed every 2 inches or so with about 18" between rows; when harvesting, cut stems three inches above ground, leaving the center growing tip intact.
