Set in nineteenth century Brazil, and based on a real episode in Brazilian history, this novel is the tory of an apocalyptic movement led by a mysterious prophet to establish another republic: Canudos, whose citizens are all the damned of the earth, the prostittues, bandits and beggars who flee to the Brazilian frontier.
