The original edition, published in 1986, of this study of Seamus Heaney's poetry was entitled "A Student's Guide to Seamus Heaney". Written with Heaney's co-operation and with access to his papers, it has been revised throughout and contains additional chapters on each of his poetry collections published since the first edition, as well as separate discussions of his work as a translator and essayist.
