Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 1860-1939) made his international art-world debut in stunning fashion. In December 1894, while working as a commercial illustrator and drawing teacher in Paris, he happened into a print shop and learned that famed French actress Sarah Bernhardt desperately needed a last-minute poster to advertise her upcoming performance in the play Gismonda, set to open a week later. Mucha quickly created a poster so new and exciting it spawned a whole style, now known as art nouveau. This calendar takes you back to La Belle époque with fifteen of Mucha's lush and lovely works.
