The Loretto Chapel has long been a destination for travelers to New Mexico and an architectural wonder. The story of the Sisters of Loretto's mission in Santa Fe and their Gothic-Revival chapel with its miraculous, gravity-defying staircase--built by a mysterious carpenter who answered their prayers--are important chapters in Santa Fe history in the late nineteenth century. The author uncovers another potential builder of the miracle staircase and colorfully paints the period of Bishop Lamy and the Lorettine Sisters.
