For the first time-a guide to the heart of the finest mountain and cross-country skiing in America! Here are full descriptions of more than 95 ski-mountaineering routes, about half beginner/intermediate, the rest gauged as advanced in skill level. The routes, just slightly more than a day's drive from Boulder or Denver, reach out from ski resort areas and towns into the magnificent slopes of surrounding mountains, offering ridge-top vistas of supreme beauty. Unique to this book is a complete description of the new Tenth Mountain Trail route and hut system between Aspen and Vail (named for the Division that performed so well in World War II after training in the area). This scenic route offers five days of delightful skiing. All routes list length, elevation, skill level required, hazards if any, appropriate maps. An excellent collection of photos measures up to the spectacular scenery, and topo maps with route overlays make the way clear. The author, a resident of Woody Creek near Aspen, has skied in the area for 19 years, wherever and whenever there is snow.
