What IS the Circle of Fifths?

The Circle of Fifths is essentially a diagram showing the Sharps or Flats that are needed to create the various Scales used in music. ( A Scale is a series of notes spaced a specific distance from each other. It has a unique sound to it and is the backbone of the song. )

For instance, when writing or learning a song in "D", it's handy to know that you're going to need two sharps to make the D Major Scale. That Scale will determine the melody and chords that will appear in a song in the Key of D with very few exceptions.

It really is the Key that unlocks the music. At least "popular" music. The kind that hits the mainstream charts.
