From 1946 until the present day, Heathrow has been a building site, as the airport has grown to cope with the demands of being London’s main airport. Ian Anderson takes us on a history of the airport, showing us the development of one of the world’s busiest airports.

In 1946, Heathrow became Britain’s most important airport. The first flights used temporary tents alongside the runway for arrivals and departures until a new terminal was built. From then on, building work has been continuous as the airport has changed and adapted to its rapid growth. Today, the airport has five terminals, a brand new control tower and there is talk of a potential third runway as the airport is now operating at almost full capacity. Some 45,000 people are directly employed at the airport, with many millions using it on a weekly basis.
