This new graphic novel, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” offers a dizzying tale of madness: A demon lover (back from the grave to exact her revenge), the surreal imaginings of an insane narrator, and the secret behind the death of a beautiful young woman. Lavishly illustrated with gorgeous, highly detailed paintings, the artwork weaves a haunting tapestry of terror. Coupled with Poe’s prose, the reader is treated to a roller-coaster ride racing from atmospheric dread to heart-pounding violence with the turn of a page. Dispensing with the crude lettering of most graphic novels, this version of “The Raven” employs a typeface in keeping with the mood and period of Poe’s original story. Coupled with the beautiful layout and illustrations on each page, this book provides a feast for the eyes as well as remaining easy to read. Odd visual twists give new insights and slants to the story, presenting a dark, Gothic tale of gloom, decay, and revenge that’s a must read for fans of Edgar Allan Poe.
