The 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates turned in one of the most remarkable performances in sports history by coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series, the franchise’s fifth all-time championship. They were led by team captain Willie Stargell, big swinging right fielder Dave Parker, speedy base thief Omar Moreno, and relief pitcher Kent Tekulve, but got timely contributions from nearly every member of the roster in doing whatever it took to fight and claw their way back into the series with a Game 5 victory at Three Rivers Stadium and then take the final two games on the road in Baltimore. Their penchant for the dramatic and their all hands on deck approach to winning showed that the ’79 Bucs were more than just a championship baseball club; they were a “Family” in the truest sense of the word.
