By Request is all about food and the part it plays in our everyday lives how it plays a part in our personal and collective memory; how it signifies specific times in our lives. The weekly column was part of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin s Food section for decades under the stewardship of several different writers, and continues in the new Honolulu Star-Advertiser under Betty Shimabukuro. Readers write in about dishes they ve enjoyed at restaurants, that they remember from childhood, that they re just curious about. I try to find answers to a few of these mysteries. This cookbook is a second helping of stories and recipes that grew of out those requests. By Request has always depended on the kindness of great cooks willing to share.
