Barrie and Dorothy Hawkins don't quite realize what they are getting themselves into when they take on the challenge of rescuing and fostering orphan dogs. Every canine character has a surprise in store; among them are Monty, the dog with a taste for cheese; Oscar, who has never been walked or played with but finds a new zest for life at the age of twelve; and Digby, the enormous ex–guard dog who, when he’s not squashing daisies, is squashing Barrie’s foot.
