In the sleepy, close-knit, lakeside community of Glenorky, a handful of rather peculiar men are being treated by a psychiatrist Wanda Bell. Although they have difficulty admitting it, they are all convinced that they have been inhabited by Orky, a monster who, legend has it, lives in the lake. When Dr. Jack Black and his two children take their family vacation in Glenorky, the kids and disappointed--Dad won't stop working to spend time with them. Upon his own close encounter with Orky--which he thinks was a concussion-induced dream--Jack finally discovers the joy of playing with his kids, digging tunnels to China and his own imagination. Ashley, his daughter, is able to grasp something that her dad, and even her teenage brother, can't: that just outside their cabin, in the lake that laps at the shore... there is a creature in the lake, a gentle, magical creature who will need their help to survive.
