This is the very first episode that started it all. The enigmatic and romantic Morse, a man who never uses his Christian name and finds solace in real ale, classical music and difficult crosswords, never quite finds romance. He hopes things will turn out differently with the beautiful Anne Stavely, but it is a love destined not to be when she is found dead under mysterious circumstances.
