The Starrett 816A prick punch is 4" long and has a 5/64" diameter tapered point. The point is sharp for precise placement of a drill bit. The punch has a tempered steel shank for strength and a hardened steel point for wear resistance. The shank is round and knurled for grip.

Center and prick punches are used to make a dimple mark in materials to guide a drill bit. Manual punch hand tools have a metal shank and a shaped or flat point that is typically tapped with a ball-peen hammer to make a pre-drilling indent.
