As a child Mary Ann Thompson (Meredith Baxter) often found herself the object of her abusive father's vicious temper and mean-spirited games. As a caring, single mother working as a nurse, she doesn't seem to bear the scars of her troubled childhood...or so it seems. However, the ready supply of drugs at the clinic where she works proves to be the crutch she needs. She begins to constantly seek refuge in a drug-induced euphoria and her life quickly spirals downward.
