As migrant sharecroppers working across the 1950s South, strong-willed Kitty Messenger (Tyne Daly), her husband George (Gerald McRaney) and their family survive only on their dreams for the future. But their world is shattered one day when Kitty and George are wrongly arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison. Their children are taken from them and placed in a juvenile home. To make matters worse, 16-year-old Phyllis (Alicia Silverstone) is transferred to a prison-like home for delinquent girls. After nearly two years in prison, Kitty and George win new trials to fight for their freedom. But they have been told that the state has declared them "unfit parents" and is preparing to find the children permanent homes. In a race against time, the Messengers - armed only with persistence and unending hope - face the authorities and demand their right to justice as caring, loving parents who deserve their children back!
