In late 17th century Northern Italy, great violinmakers of Brescia and Cremona conspired with composers to satisfy a growing demand for technically demanding violin music as the instrument's popularity grew. The resulting repertoire is a body of rich and virtuosic sinfonia, concerti and vocal works that influenced a generation of composers throughout continental Europe.
