In 2003 the USPS issued this 37 cent stamp honoring Thurgood Marshall (1908-93) as the 26th honoree of the Black Heritage Series. He was legal director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1940 to 1961. President John F. Kennedy appointed Marshall to a federal judgeship in 1961. In 1967, President Lyndon Johnson named Marshall to the Supreme Court, making him the first African-American to serve on the high Court. He served on the court for 24 years.
