In 1968, French film maker Pierre Schoendoerffer won a Best Documentary Features Oscar for the 'Anderson Platoon'. This documentary is based on the original version, but accompanied with Stuarts Whitman's soulful narration follows a group of American GIs commanded by the first African American West Point graduate, Lieutenant Joseph Anderson, witnessing reconnaissance and skirmishes helicopter warfare, jungle patrols, all with freshness and vitality of a newscast from that era.
