According to the Container Recycling Institute, less than 15% of plastic water bottles in the U.S. are actually recycled. HDPE is a sturdy and reliable translucent plastic. Nalgene bottles made from HDPE resist UV penetration, which can damage and discolor the plastic. LDPE (#4) is flexible, impact-resistant and microwave-proof. Both plastics are dishwasher safe and able to withstand temperatures from -148 to 176° F (-100 to 80° C).
