A young man infatuated with a life size dancing doll, is taught a lesson by his fiancée. The darker implications of this scenario, inspired by Der Sandmann by E.T.A. Hoffman, are swept away by Delibes joie de vivre, exemplified in a graceful waltz, exuberant mazurka & earthy czardas. In Minkus' Don Quixote, first seen in Moscow in 1869 the doleful knight & his windmills cede the limelight to a romantic young couple.
