Also known as the "fragrant mushroom," this symbol of longevity has been used in China for over 6,000 years and is now one of the world's most widely sold fungi. Large and umbrella shaped, Shiitake Mushrooms grow wild on the trunks of fallen trees and have a rich, smoky flavor with an exotic hearty aroma and firm texture. Especially prized in Asian and Pacific rim cuisines, the Shiitake Mushroom is also excellent as a base for pasta, meat and fish sauces, as well as risottos, stuffing or simply grilled. The Shiitake's strong steak-like pungent flavor is a great meat substitute, and is delicious when finely chopped with veggies and other vegetarian side dishes. Traditionally added to miso soup. Delicious side dish or topping for chicken, beef, lamb or venison. Adds beefy flavor to vegetarian dishes.
