Designed to remove air from the fuel line. Air in a fuel line results in poor combustion, creating a shining noise incomplete or inconsistent flame. If bad enough a lack of pressure develops and can "lock out" the burner resulting in a total shut down. Also good to shorten the distance between the burner and oil supply
