A long and dangerous undercover investigation by an undercover detective, a man with his own compromised past that he means to keep hidden at all costs. At great risk to himself he makes scores of secret recordings with Mafia hoodlums, with corrupt lawyers, bondsmen, prosecutors, judges--and with corrupt cops as well. He has determined above all to stay away from former partners, men with whom he has kicked in doors, made arrests, men to whom he feels closer than to his own wife, men he loves more than brothers, even as, inexorably, the prosecutors who are his masters force him toward them. A story with one tense scene, and one moral dilemma, after another.
