A dazzling success at the Stratford Festival, The Gondoliers has been described as a musical approach to fairytale hilarity. Set in Venice, circa 1750, the nonsensical yet delightful plot involves two gondoliers who rule a Spanish duchy on the assumption that one is a foundling prince. The Gondoliers was to be Gilbert & Sullivan's last success, and it is just as funny and refreshing as when first staged over a hundred years ago.
