Today the American highways are populated by truckers but before the trucks arrived on the scene, goods were transported by railroad - leading to countless stories, anecdotes and legends that have found their way into the music of the country & western, rhythm & blues and rock & roll scenes and eventually into pop music. There were stories about specific trains, the heroic deeds of railroaders - and the hobos, those fare-dodging tramps who travelled the length and breadth of the country and who were brutally combated by the railroaders and their bosses.
