Malva sylvestris is commonly known as Hollyhock. It is a short-lived perennial that gives a profusion of color! This Zebrina variety has lovely white to lavender blooms with deep purple stripes that point to the center. The blooms are showy, 2 - 3 inches, nicely scented, and the foliage is glossy and attractive. It is short-lived but will often reseed itself keeping a Hollyhock in the flower border for many years. Hummingbirds and butterflies are very attracted to it. After flowering, cut it back hard. In some areas the Hollyhock will have a second bloom in late summer. Start the seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seeds into the soil but do not cover them. Keep them moist until germination. With temperatures of 70 - 75F, germination is normally within 28 days. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed. Space the plants 36 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained soil. During the blooming season, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every few weeks.
