Pushy, disheveled newspaper reporter, Jancy Dewhurst, 23, is nervous covering her first homicide, and irritates Jim Wills, 27, the natty cop heading the investigation. Wills has no use for meddling reporters.

Jancy provides a partial identification of the victim and decides Wills is an insufferable bureaucrat. Adding to her annoyance, she finds him attractive.

A second victim marked with the killer’s same odd signature precipitates a second brusque meeting between reporter and cop.

Wills ably assimilates information into theories, but overlooks vital data. The very observant Jancy notices every detail, but has no idea how they apply. Brainstorming, the two realize they complement each other, and they develop a grudging mutual regard, but not in time.
