Antirrhinum majus maximum or Snapdragon, is a popular annual that has a long bloom season. This variety, Appleblossom, has soft rose colored blooms that have upper and lower petals that form a jaw-like opening. Children love to poke their fingers into the jaws and release them with a "snap." Very entertaining, and they make great cut flowers. Sow Snapdragon seed indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Do not cover the seed but gently press it into the soil. Keep the seed moist until germination occurs. With a temperature range of 64 - 72F, germination is usually within 21 days. Thin seedlings to 12 - 18 inches apart. To encourage bushier growth, pinch the tips of the seedlings. Grow Snapdragon in full sun and in moist, fertile and well-drained soil. After their blooms are spent, trim the plants back, and they will quickly be blooming again. Snapdragons are usually resistant to deer, and they perform best in cooler climates.
