Lathyrus latifolius is known as perennial Sweet Pea. This Pearl variety has a mix of colors in shade of white, pink and red. The blooms are about 1 inch across and will give a lovely display all summer. Sweet Pea is a vining plant that needs a structure to climb. Perennial Sweet Pea is also known as Everlasting Pea, Wild Pea, or Pea-Vine. It does not have the sweet scent that annual varieties have, but it is a legume and is beneficial to the soil. It is recommended to roughen the seed coat lightly with a file and then soak the seeds overnight in warm water. These treatments help break the seed's dormancy. Sow the seed directly outdoors after frost danger has passed. Place 2 seeds per plant 4 inches apart and cover 1/2 inch deep with soil. Keep the seed moist until germination occurs. With a temperature range of 64 - 68F, germination is usually within 21 days. Grow Sweet Peas in full sun to partial shade and in moist but well-drained soil.
