Shabbat (or Sabbath) is the Jewish Day of Rest, one of the best known of all Jewish observances. It begins at sundown on Friday night with the lighting of the two Shabbat candles and ends on Saturday night at one hour past sunset. The candle-lighting ceremony helps to introduce the serenity of Shabbat, a day of peace and rest when one can set aside weekday concerns and share a special time with family and friends. One of the highlights of the Shabbat meal is the Kiddush ceremony. We sanctify Shabbat by reciting special blessings over a goblet of wine. It is traditional to set the Shabbat table with two loaves of Challah, a special braided bread in honor of Shabbat.
