Uncinia Rubra (Firedance) is a brilliant red-bronze ornamental grass. It's one of the most distinctive grasses available, and it will brighten up any garden. In the summer, clusters of brown flowers appear, followed by black seed heads that are attractive. Uncinia Rubra stands 12 inches tall and will grow 12 inches in width. Firedance is a sedge and is commonly found in the scrub and wetlands of New Zealand. It grows easily from ornamental grass seed and adapts to many areas. This ornamental grass grows best in full to partial sun and in rich soil with regular watering. Add this ornamental grass to a flower garden, rock garden, or containers. Uncinia seeds have an irregular germination, often taking several months. A cold, moist treatment prior to sowing is very beneficial. Many gardeners will start the seeds in the late fall using a cold frame outdoors so that the seeds can experience the temperature fluctuations.
