The mandrake is a relative of barberry and goldenseal found in the eastern half of North America. Plants grow 6 to 18 inches (15 to 40 cm) tall in patches, producing a single stalk capped with an "umbrella" of one or two deeply indented leaves. The plant blooms with a single small white flower that produces a single yellow, mushy berry, the only part of the plant that can be eaten safely, in moderation. Native Americans used mandrake as an emetic (to induce vomiting), as a cathartic (to relieve severe constipation), and as an escharotic (to remove unusual growths of the skin). The latter property is now most valued, podophyllum resin being employed externally in the treatment of venereal warts and similar papillomas caused by viral infection. Magically, a whole mandrake root can be placed on the mantel in the home and will give the house protection, fertility and prosperity. Mandrake is also hung on the headboard for protection during sleep, carried to attract love and worn to prevent illness. To "activate" a piece of mandrake root, place it in a prominent position in the home and leave it there undisturbed for 3 days. Then, place it in warm water and leave it there overnight. After that, the root is said to be activated and can be used in any magickal application. The water that the root slept in can be sprinkled on doors and windows for protection or onto people to purify them. Money placed beside a mandrake root is said to double, and the scent of the Mandrake causes sleep. CAUTION! Use this herb sparingly in incenses and baths - as it can be toxic.
