Dianthus amurensis is a hardy perennial that has a long bloom season and loves a full sun position in the flower border. Commonly called Amur River Pink, this Dianthus has masses of violet pink blooms and attractive lance-shaped foliage. It reaches 12 inches in height and creates an attractive flowering mound. The heat and humidity of summer does not seem to bother this Amur River Dianthus. It makes a wonderful container plant as it prefers good drainage. Start the seed indoors several weeks before the end of frost season. Or, directly start the seed outdoors after frosts have passed. Cover the seed thinly with soil and keep it moist. At a temperature of 68F, normal germination is within 21 days.
