This book was one of the founding documents of the "Holiness movement" in America. Phoebe Palmer founded her "Tuesday Meeting" in New York City in 1835.

Major themes of this work include the idea that sanctification can be instantaneous, we simply must surrender our entire lives on the altar of God. Then, since that altar is Jesus, we become instantly sanctified, and thus we are truly sanctified regardless of our feelings.
