Serrano produces hot, green peppers that turn red when ripe. They are ready for harvesting / picking in about 80 days after transplanting. The plants themselves reach a mature height of about 18 to 24 inches tall, and spread about 18 inches wide. This pepper reaches anywhere between 6,000 and 20,000 units on the Scoville scale. Like all pepper plants, Serrano will produce fruits through the summer months and will later wilt with the first killing frost.
- Heat Level: Medium to hot ranging from 10,000–23,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), typically hotter than jalapeños but less intense than habaneros, delivering a sharp, bright burn that builds quickly and lingers moderately.
- Appearance & Size: Slender, elongated pods usually 1.5–4 inches long and about 0.5 inches wide, with smooth, glossy, firm skin; starting medium to dark green and ripening to bright red (sometimes orange or yellow in select varieties), often with a pointed or slightly blunt tip.
- Flavor Profile: Crisp, bright, and grassy with a clean, vegetal taste and a lively citrus-like tang underneath the heat, providing fresh spiciness without heavy smokiness or sweetness—ideal for adding vibrant punch to dishes.
- Plant Characteristics: Vigorous, upright plants grow 24–36 inches tall, highly productive with abundant clusters of fruit, and adapt well to warm climates, containers, or raised beds; they mature relatively quickly (70–80 days) and continue producing heavily throughout the season.
