Now 1916, World War I rages in Europe and change is afoot in class-bound British society. Several men from the estate leave to fight causing anxiety upstairs and down. Lord Grantham's age keeps him from service, so he agrees to have the manor serve as a soldiers' convalescent home, with youngest daughter Sybil a nursemaid.
