Astragalus membranaceus, or just simply Astragalus, has been an important herb in Chinese medicine for centuries. It is used specifically in helping the immune system and in protecting the body against disease. The plant reaches 48 inches in height, and it produces yellow blooms in mid-summer. This perennial is in the legume family, and the roots are harvested when the plant is 4 years of age. Start the seed indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost.
