Green Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) - Ocimum tenuiflorum, commonly referred to as Holy Basil, is an aromatic plant in the family Lamiaceae which is widespread as a cultivated herb plant grown from herb seeds. Holy basil is a bushy short-lived perennial often grown as an annual that originates from tropical Asia and is naturalized in warm regions worldwide. It has been cultivated for centuries and boasts a wide array of uses including culinary, medicinal and religious. It has a pungent, peppery flavor and upright form. There are two main types of Holy Basil: green-leaved and purple-leaved. Holy Basil is cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes, and for its essential oil. It is widely known across South Asia as a medicinal plant and an herbal tea, commonly used in Ayurveda, and has an important role within the Vaishnavite tradition of Hinduism, in which devotees perform worship involving Tulsi plants or leaves. Holy Basil herbs are used in Thai cuisine. Beef, pork, and chicken are common meats spiced with Holy Basil.
